WAEC Requirements & Instructions

The West African Examination Council (W.A.E.C) will administer the Senior Secondary certificate examination to School candidates in the third year of the Senior Secondary course. The examination will test the extent to which Students have covered the materials contained in the teaching curriculum approved by the National Council for Education. The syllabuses contained therein are distillation of the teaching curriculum and Teachers should regard them only as guidelines and not as ends in themselves.

Candidates should acquaint themselves thoroughly with regulations since this form the basis for taking the examination. The SSC examination is made up of two components: The continuous assessment which carries 30%, and the external examination which carries the remaining 70%. The Examination is held once in a year in the months of May and June. The School assessments for the first two and the first term of the third year of submit their assessment scores for the two years and a term in triplicate by entering them in C.A. assessment mark sheets obtained from the council and submitted as follows:

  1. The original and duplicate copies to the zoned/branch office in the State.
  2. A copy to the State Ministry of Education.

Choice of Subjects (Core)

(a) Core Subjects
For the award of the Senior Certificate, Candidates must enter for and sit for a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects from the above list. However, Candidates must offer the following core subjects.

1. English language
2. One Nigerian Language
3. Mathematics
4. One of the following alternative subjects; Physics, Chemistry, & Biology.
5. One of Literature in English, History. Geography
6. Agricultural Science or any vocational subjects.

(B) Electives
In addition to the above, every student must offer three elective subjects not already offered as a core subject, and may drop off these electives in the third year. The elective subjects are
